A poorly chosen ship chandler can cause delivery delays, substandard products, SOLAS compliance issues, and unexpected cost overruns. With hundreds of chandlers operating in every major port, knowing how to evaluate them is critical for fleet managers and purchasing officers alike.
Here are the 7 key criteria to assess when selecting a ship chandler.
Always confirm the chandler holds valid local business licenses and, where applicable, ISO 9001 quality certification. On digital platforms like E-ShipSupply, look for the Verified Supplier badge, which confirms the company has passed identity verification and documentation checks.
A reliable chandler should be able to supply all major categories: provisions, deck stores, engine room stores, safety equipment, and bonded goods. Ask for their catalog or product list upfront. Chandlers with 1,000+ active SKUs are generally better equipped to fulfill complex orders.
Confirm the chandler operates directly in your port of call (not just through agents). Ask about their guaranteed delivery window — reputable chandlers commit to 12–24 hour delivery for standard orders and offer express options for urgent needs.
Request itemized quotes, not lump-sum totals. Compare across at least three chandlers per port. Hidden fees for port dues, delivery surcharges, or documentation can inflate costs by 15–25%. Platforms like E-ShipSupply enable simultaneous multi-supplier quoting for easy comparison.
Check verified customer reviews and average ratings. Look for chandlers with a minimum of 4.0/5.0 rating and at least 20 completed orders. Pay attention to reviews mentioning delivery reliability and order accuracy.
Send a test inquiry and measure response time. Professional chandlers respond within 2–4 hours during business hours. Evaluate whether they confirm order details (vessel name, berth, delivery time) and proactively notify you of any shortages.
For safety equipment, verify that the chandler provides correct SOLAS/MED certificates and test records. For provisions, request hygiene certificates and cold-chain documentation. Missing paperwork can result in port state control detentions.
Comparing at least 3 chandlers per port is recommended. Using a B2B marketplace like E-ShipSupply lets you send one request and receive multiple quotes simultaneously.
International ship chandling networks exist, but local expertise at each port is often superior. For fleet operations, consider a hybrid approach: a global framework agreement with local chandler flexibility.
