WHAT IS SHIP LAUNCHING AIRBAG?
Ship launching airbags are specialized air bags that are used for launching marine vessels. These air bags are made of synthetic-tire-cord reinforcement layers and rubber layers,and are also known as marine airbags. They were invented in 1980.The first known use of marine airbags occurred on January 20, 1981 with the launch of a tank barge from the Xiao Qinghe shipyard. From then on, more and more shipyards, especially in China and Southeast Asia, began to use air bags to launch small and medium-sized vessels.
In recent years, higher strength materials have been used in air bag production, allowing them to have much more bearing capacity. Hence, they have begun to be used at the launching of larger vessels. In October 2011, the successful launch of one vessel with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 75,000 tonnes set a world record for ship launches utilizing air bags.

Standard comply and exceed International Standard specifies the terms and definitions,classification,materials and dimensions,test items and methods for air bags to be used for launching a vessel.It also specifies issues such as marking documentation, packaging, Transport,Storage and so on. This International Standard is intended for designing, manufacturing, testing and accepting air bags that are made of Synthetic-Tyre-Cord Reinforcement layers.

TEST
General
All products must meet the following test criteria.
Test Condition
Unless otherwise specified, tests shall be performed under the following conditions:
a) Ambient Temperature: 10 °C ~ 35 °C,
b) Media:(1) dry clean compressed air, (2) clean fresh water for bursting test.
Testing instruments,including pressure gauges and testing machine,shall be calibrated.
Air Bag Test Size
Test be performed using a full-sized air bag.If the air bag is too large to be mounted on the test machine,the test may be performed on a scaled-down air bag.In order to maintain a proper representation of the full-sized sample air bag, the diameter of the scaled-down air bag shall be no less than 1/2 of the full-sized sample air bag diameter, while
the length (L) shall be no less than 3 times the diameter of the scaled-down air bag.
Compression-Recovery Test
To test the recoverability of an air bag,the air bag is to be repeatedly and rapidly compressed and released over a very short period of time.Fill the air bag with air until reaching the initial pressure stated in Table 2, and then compress the air bag perpendicularly till the percentage deformation reaches 75 %.The air bag shall be kept in this compressed state
for 1 minute. Afterward,release the air bag and it shall recover more than 97 % of its original diameter within 5 minutes.

ISO 14409:2011 specifies the terms and definitions, classification, materials and dimensions, test items and methods for air bags to be used for launching a vessel. It also specifies issues such as marking, documentation, packaging, transport, storage and so on.
ISO 14409:2011 is intended for designing, manufacturing, testing and accepting air bags that are made of synthetic-tire-cord reinforcement layers.
